2009 IFDS World Blind Sailing Championship

Held on Lake Rotorua New Zealand out of the Rotorua Yacht Club and hosted by the Bay Of Plenty Trailer Yacht Squadron, a very successful and well organised event developed over the period of March 13 to March 21 2009.

The attending Countries or States were Australia (Western Australia), Canada, Finland, France, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, USA California, USA Massachusetts.

The Regatta opened with a traditional Maori (Powhiri) with Chairman Arthur O'Neill accepting the challenge from a Maori Warrior. This was after Arthur and David Staley (IFDS) along with BSI Secretary Don Mason and New Zealand Chairman Dick Lancaster were delivered to the ceremony by Waka (Maori War Canoe). During the exchange of formalities Arthur O'Neill presented to the City Mayor an Indian Peace Pipe to signify that the regatta entrants acknowledged the help of the City of Rotorua in allowing the Championship to be hosted in their City. The teams then formed by their respective flags, anthems played and the regatta was declared open

New Zealand retained Teams prize, the Squadron Cup, won from Great Britain in Newport Rhode Island 2006.

After 15 races, Italy, skippered by Luigi Bertanza, held onto its lead at the top of the table, placing first in the B1 division and winning the Colin Spanhake Trophy. New Zealand, skippered by Dick Lancaster finished second, and Norway, skippered by Thomas Johannesen finished third.

In the B2 fleet, Paulien Eitjes from Tauranga skippering the New Zealand crew, completely dominated racing this week, winning 14 out of 15 races. Great Britain, skippered by Lucy Hodges, finished second.
Japan, skippered by Takao Sugiyama, finished third.

In the B3 fleet, Gary Kirby skippering the Great Britain crew, dominated much of the racing, finishing well ahead at the top of the table. New Zealand, skippered by Dave Allerton, finished second.
The USA crew skippered by Jason Wallenstein, finished third.
